It’s not every day that you can say a big name like Netflix took notice of you. Well, last Wednesday (coincidentally right after I published another Back to the Future article) Netflix posted a video on their YouTube account depicting my giant article detailing the Cinematic Chiasmus of the entire Back to the Future Trilogy! Seriously, check it out above.

That’s pretty amazing. This isn’t the first time someone has noticed how awesome that particular article is, but I’m not gonna lie – it’s pretty cool to be noticed by Netflix and to have my name forever etched into the popular pantheon of film fandom.

I’m just going to briefly share what I love about the video and offer a little constructive criticism about what I wish they had done a little better.

The Power of Love

I absolutely love:

• The image of the Flux Capacitor representing the three parts of the chiasmus. It’s an inspired choice.
• The excellent animation and a fun use of Doc in a Greek sort of way.
• The fact that they inserted the month and year alongside the movie scenes they depict.

This Is Heavy

I would have loved to have seen:

• My name spelled correctly in the video. It should say “The Lockard Theory of Back to the Future,” not Lockhard.
• The chiasmus explored a bit more deeply. The video gives the impression that the chiasmus is a bit superficial, based on the few examples shared, but I understand that it would be tough to graphically detail its complexity in just three minutes. If I had done it, I would have shown a screen full of scenes going down one side and up the other, like a giant V, and then have a quick zoom to the bottom of the V to show where everything converges. I think that would have gotten the point across better about how it all works.

These are just minor things in the big scheme. The point is Netflix got the word out about how crazy cool the concept of Cinematic Chiasmus is. As of this writing, the video has gotten more than 20,000 views.

I didn’t have a clue that they were interested in my article or that they were doing a video on it. I would have loved to have helped them, but even without any input from me they did a great job distilling my ideas into that video. You can tell they really read my article closely because of the little details they picked up on, like the license plate being left behind on the first and last time travels of the DeLorean, which is something I mentioned but didn’t make a huge deal about.

I’m just so pleased to see my work inspiring others to gain a whole new appreciation for a beloved film series like Back to the Future. I hope that trilogy gets heaped with even more praise than it has over the years, thanks to my little contribution. In the words of Marty “Eastwood” McFly, that would make my day.
