I Cannot Write Without This

I have learned that I cannot write without something very special. The power I have with words is not something that is natural to me, but it’s a gift. And I’d like to share how I realized that by describing a recent time when I couldn’t write.

Lost and Abandoned

I was recently trying to write something at work, and I found that I couldn’t put a single word to paper. I felt darkness all around me and a heaviness pressing down on my mind. It was a strange feeling. Lonely and isolated.

When I write, I’m always filled with light and joy. It’s fun. I’m talking in a way that enables me to express my thoughts in a pure form of communication, free of stuttering, social anxiety, or other inhibitions that come from public speaking.

But this time I felt lost and abandoned. No ideas were flowing into my mind like they normally do. Thus, I couldn’t write. This helped me understand how much I rely on pure inspiration to create written works. They don’t come solely from me.

Walking with God

In moments of desperation when nothing seems to be working, I find that a change of scenery helps. So I took a walk in the cold January air to clear my head. As I walked, a thought came to me that seemed to be negative, but it helped me feel better. The thought was, “What if I can’t do this? What if I need help?”

The project I was working on felt too big for me to handle. When I finally admitted that I couldn’t do it all by myself, it was like a fog parted and I could feel light entering my heart again. I felt the heavy weight lift off my shoulders as I talked with God about my problem. He comforted me and helped me have hope.

Joyful Return

Returning from my walk, I was immediately able to make a little progress on the writing project. The next day the fog lifted completely, and I was able to get to work in earnest. The joy came back, and ideas flowed into me as they always had before. I was able to finish writing in short order.

I think what I was meant to learn from this experience was that I can’t write without God’s help. All my talents come from Him. I prayed fervently for help to overcome my weakness, and I felt comforted.

I cannot write without Divine assistance. I don’t know how others do it, but that’s how it works for me. For example, I know that a movie is a chiasmus before I go looking for it because I feel it long before I put a pen to paper. An article is already written before I sit down and crudely type it out with my fingers on a keyboard. It’s just waiting for me to put a form to its substance.

It’s like how Michelangelo described sculpting. “Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

Being in Tune

Rod Serling once described the writing process as ideas floating around him, and all he had to do was reach out and pluck a few out of the air and put them into written form. And he wound up creating one of the best TV shows of all time (The Twilight Zone) from that well of ideas. For me, it’s more like a radio. I need to be in tune with the Spirit of God to write. I have to be at the right frequency to hear clear messages, not static or silence.

When you read something on my website that feels like true inspiration, that’s because it didn’t just come from me. I’m just a conduit, a receiver, who transmits what I receive to the best of my ability. I’m certainly not perfect, and I’ve not always written the best articles. But I keep trying and listening. That’s worth something at least.

If you ever feel stuck with a problem, I recommend following in my footsteps and going to the Source of truth for help. That always works for me.
