I Knew the Despicable Me Series Was Popular, But I Didn’t Expect This

As it turns out, Despicable Me 4 is the most popular movie of all time. In fact, it’s probably the most popular piece of entertainment of all time! By a mile. Or a trillion miles. Check out this chart of the top movies of 2024 I saw on Box Office Mojo this past weekend.

Despicable Me 4 made $1.7 trillion (with a T) on its opening weekend! Inside Out 2’s once-impressive $1.2 billion suddenly looked like peanuts in comparison. A trillion is a thousand billions, so Despicable Me’s gross was an order of magnitude greater than any other film that had come before it.

Something didn’t seem quite right about that, so I clicked on it to see where all that money came from.

Well I’ll be. Some international markets just gobbled up the Minions and Gru. I went ahead and accepted that we live in a world where a simple kids movie sequel could gross more money than every other movie that had been made combined.

Okay, I’m just kidding. But that was really weird to see when I checked the weekly box office numbers last Sunday. Naturally, I followed up three hours later and found that sanity had been restored. Despicable Me 4 hadn’t opened in some mysterious foreign country that dumped more than its own GDP to watch it in a single weekend.

This is what Box Office Mojo looked like when I revisited it a little later.

Looks like Gru shrank just a tad. From trillions to millions. Another famous villain-turned-good-guy, Dr. Evil, would be very upset.
