At the start of this year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I drew a comparison of our situation to the absurdity of a scene at the start of Young Frankenstein. It’s the one in which Dr. Frederick Frankenstein bids a somber but loving farewell to his bride-to-be by putting his elbow to hers.
That scene is supposed to be humorous. However, it turns out it’s no longer just a joke, or at least it’s not fiction. In case you missed it, here’s a clip from the recent G7 summit with several world leaders. I can’t tell if they’re serious or not as they forgo simple handshakes to greet each other in an awkward way. With their elbows.
I know that they went on to shake hands normally after that, and their initial interactions may have just been for show. I just couldn’t help doing a doubletake at the ludicrousness of what I was seeing. To be honest, Young Frankenstein has much better comedic timing.
This is the Deja Reviewer bidding you farewell until we meet again.
