I’ve talked about Christmas Eve on Sesame Street before, noting its impact on me as a child. As a grownup, I’ve discovered something even more profound in it that I want to share with you to possibly change your whole perspective on this special holiday.
Keep Christmas with You
There’s a song early on in it called “Keep Christmas with You” that encourages people to hold onto the Christmas Spirit all through the year. It’s beautiful, like everything else in that TV special.
Something they repeat again and again hit home differently this time, though. Feel free to see if you pick up on it before I explain what I realized.
A New Way of Understanding Those Words
I pondered deeply on those words, “Keep Christmas with you all through the year.” This might seem obvious, but it struck me that the very way we measure time is rooted in the true meaning of Christmas: Jesus Christ’s birth. Every year puts us one year further away from His birth and one year closer to His Second Coming.
Every time we say the year (whether the current year, a previous year, or a future year), we are referencing Christ. Each year, starting at 1 A.D., is formally known as the year of our Lord. So it’s not hard at all to keep Christmas with us at all times. Isn’t that wonderful?
Keep Christ with Us All Through His Year
It’s certainly a good idea to follow the advice of the Sesame Street song and remember Christmas all through the year by our kind, loving actions toward others. But it’s just as important to know that the answer to the question, “How do we keep Christmas with us all through the year?” is found right there in the question! Simply remember whose year it is and what that year signifies.
This is the year of our Lord, meaning it’s been that many years since Jesus Christ’s birth. It’s the same for 2024, 2025, and beyond. As I began to reveal last week, the entire history of the world revolves around Christ in one big chiasmus. That’s reflected by the fact that the way we reckon our time is according to His mortal life, which He gave to save us from our sins. Every year is either before His birth or after it.
Let us keep Christ with us all through His year. This is especially important as we enter the Last Days before we greet Him for His triumphal return.
