An interesting thing happened in 2015. The fourth movie in the seemingly dead Jurassic Park franchise debuted in theaters that year: Jurassic World. It revitalized its film series, serving as a bridge between the three original films from 1993-2000 and the later films that are still being produced. The newest sequel, Jurassic World: Rebirth, just arrived a couple weeks ago.
A Prescient Throwaway Gag
The reason I say that this is interesting is because Back to the Future Part II had a throwaway gag in it referring to the Jaws franchise. It claimed that Max Spielberg would direct Jaws 19 in 2015. Max’s father, Steven Spielberg, executive produced all three Back to the Future films from 1985-1990, and he directed the first Jaws film in 1975 and the first two Jurassic Park films in 1993 and 1997.
The fourth movie in the Jaws series was infamously bad and destroyed that series in 1987. The fourth movie in the Jurassic Park series was well-received and breathed new life into that series in 2015, the year that Marty McFly visited at the start of Back to the Future Part II.
Still Going Strong
Endless Jaws sequels seemed to be the order of the day in the 1980s. It’s funny to me that nowadays endless Jurassic Park sequels flow from Hollywood. In a way, Back to the Future Part II correctly predicted this sequence of events.
Sure, the Jaws series is long gone, having been soundly killed by Jaws: The Revenge nearly 40 years ago. However, the Jurassic World series is still going strong, and it’s now on its seventh film. Not quite 19, but few film franchises outside of James Bond ever get close to that number.
From Joke to Reality
Despite the reduction in quality over the years, these sequels to Jurassic Park keep making money, so we’ll likely continue to see more of them. What used to be a joke in 1989 is a reality in 2025.
No one had heard of Jurassic Park when Back to the Future Part II was made. Michael Crichton’s novel wasn’t even published until 1990. And yet the filmmakers managed to see into the future and correctly guess that a Steven Spielberg property could successfully spawn numerous sequels long after the famed filmmaker handed the reins over to other directors.
I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade; I simply think this is a funny thing to point out. I haven’t been interested in the Jurassic World films since 2015, but if other people love them, that’s perfectly fine. Just don’t be surprised if Jurassic Park 19 eventually comes along.
