So far, major actors from three of the four Batman films that ran from 1989 to 1997 have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And their MCU roles have been the exact inverse of their original ones, villains playing heroes and a hero playing a villain. Could we see the hero of the fourth Batman film play a baddie in an upcoming MCU film? Let’s see.
Batman – Spider-Man: Homecoming
The titular star of the first two Batman movies, Michael Keaton, played one of the best villains to appear in the MCU – the Vulture – in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He pulls off eccentric good guys and bad guys with ease.
Batman Returns – Ant-Man and the Wasp
It was a pleasant surprise to see Michelle Pfeiffer show up at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp. She plays Hank Pym’s long-lost wife, and it’s fun to see her over-the-top Catwoman transformed into a soft-spoken heroine.
Batman Forever – Captain America: The First Avenger
Tommy Lee Jones almost always gives the same Samuel Gerard-esque performance in his films, but his turn as Harvey Two-Face in Batman Forever is a big departure from that template. He’s gleefully evil in that movie, but he’s back to his usual tough-as-nails persona in the first Captain America film.
Batman & Robin – ???
That leaves Batman & Robin as the odd man out. If the pattern of the other three films holds true, we should see George Clooney (who played Batman) appear as the main villain in some future MCU film. If not him, I’d settle for Chris O’Donnell or even Alicia Silverstone. I haven’t seen much of them in the past two decades.
Anyway, that’s just a fun thought I had. Who knows if it will actually happen?
