I’m always finding unusual ways of looking at movies that often (and arguably probably should) go unnoticed. But I just can’t help myself, and you get to be the lucky recipients of my musings. This time, I noticed that at least six actors and actresses in the first two films in the Alien series have surprisingly appropriate names for the roles they play. I hope you enjoy my explanations of how they fit.
Tom Skerritt
When Tom Skerritt’s Dallas pursues the alien through an airshaft, he tries to scare it into an airlock, but he’s the one who ends up scared.
John Hurt
Everyone has already thought of this, but I’ll include it anyway. John Hurt’s Kane suffers the worst kind of hurt of anyone in the original Alien.
Sigourney Weaver
Even more than the alien itself, Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley is the throughline that holds this series together and weaves a mostly consistent characterization.
Carrie Henn
Carrie Henn’s Newt gets carried a lot in the third act of Aliens by Ripley, who acts as protective of her as a mother hen.
Daniel Kash
Daniel Kash’s Pvt. Spunkmeyer buys it when an alien pays him a visit. This Daniel didn’t fare so well in the lion’s den.
William Hope
William Hope’s Lt. Gorman dies trying to escape Hadley’s Hope, and his crewmates have to leave him behind. I guess the motto for that colony on LV-426 should have been, “Abandon Hope, all ye who enter here.”
That’s all I could think of, but if you notice any other actors from Alien3 or Alien: Resurrection who fit, I’d be happy to hear them.
