I Love the Way They Did the Dune (2021) Title Font

I love every version of Dune. From the 1984 David Lynch film to the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, it’s just a great story in spite of technical limitations.

I’ve heard that the 2021 version is the best by far, but I haven’t yet seen it. I already love it, though. How can that be? Because it has the most ingenious title font I’ve ever seen.

The Two Previous Film Title Fonts

Each version of Dune has done something different with the title. The 1984 film just had a pretty standard-looking font to spell out the word DUNE. Nice and simple, nothing fancy.

The 2000 miniseries did something quite different. It made each letter look like it came from some ancient scroll. Each letter swirls in unique ways to form the word DUNe, with a lowercase e at the end. The last letter even curls around to form a kind of worm-like shape. That’s a clever touch.

What Makes the 2021 Title Special

And then there’s the 2021 title, which blows the first two out of the water in terms of its creativity.

  • It’s the same shape four times. How many titles could get away with that kind of thing – have the same shape appear four times to form a clearly discernible word like Dune?
  • The same shape points in all four main directions: left, up, down, right. This makes me think it almost looks like a chiasmus. I’m not saying I’ve gotten a feeling about this film being a Cinematic Chiasmus, but its title design strikes me as amazingly symmetrical.
  • To change the final letter in the title from a C to an E, they added a beautiful eclipse with a long horizontal line of reflected light that forms the middle line of an E. I think that is the second moon of Arrakis, which at least partly inspires Paul Atreides’ Fremen name, Muad’Dib.
  • It’s beautiful to look at. It makes me think that the film is going to be stripped of unnecessary special effects while also containing the same brilliance on display in the book.

I just can’t get enough of how brilliant the title font of Dune (2021) is. It’s a stunning achievement, and I’m excited to see if the film is as good as this portends.
