Superman: The Movie is one of my favorite films of all time for a reason. One of the best things about it is the surprising amount of depth to be found in its story. And I’d like to share something incredibly important I learned from this film.

Jonathan Kent’s Words of Wisdom

Clark Kent grows up in Smalltown America knowing full well that there’s something hugely special about him. He knows he came from another planet, but he doesn’t know why he’s here on Earth.

Clark’s adopted father Jonathan Kent sums it up perfectly in this scene when he acknowledges the young man’s frustrations. He can do all kinds of amazing things, and he feels stifled by having to keep his superpowers secret. Despite all of Jonathan’s fears and doubts about Clark’s future, he is able to settle on a crucial truth. “There is one thing I do know, son, and that is you are here for a reason.”

If this scene seems a little familiar, it’s because I included it in another article three years ago. But I have something more to say about it this time.

You’re Not Random

We all know why Superman is here. To fight for truth, justice, and the American way of life. He learns that from his Kryptonian father Jor-El in his Fortress of Solitude.

We can learn something about ourselves by putting ourselves in Clark Kent’s shoes. What if your earthly father told you that you are here for a reason, just like Jonathan Kent said to Clark? Imagine how that would make you feel. Here is someone who loves you unconditionally and has taken it upon himself to raise you to adulthood. And he wants you to know that your life has a special purpose. It’s not random chance that brought you here.

How would that affect your life moving forward? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if your life had meaning beyond simply surviving? If you had a special mission to accomplish, that would help to make sense of everything you’ve endured and accomplished. And it would guide you toward a clear destination. For Clark, it’s north. For you…

Discovering Your Purpose

Like Jonathan Kent, I know that you are here for a reason. And I know Whose reason. However, I don’t know exactly what that reason might be. Only you can find out for yourself. No earthly person can tell you the purpose of your life any more than a simple man like Jonathan could tell Clark the secrets of the universe.

You are here for a reason. It may not be to score touchdowns, but it could be to raise a happy family, humbly serve others, and discover the quiet life. I encourage you to find out why you’re here. How do you do that? Follow in Clark’s footsteps and ask your true Father who you are, why you’re here, and what you need to accomplish in this life you’ve been given.
