I’ve listened to and thoroughly enjoyed the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack for many years, and something dawned on me just recently. It’s missing a really amazing piece of music from the film! Have a listen to this.
This track would go in between “Ready the Ships” and “Battling the Green Death” if it were on the soundtrack. That video clip is only 41 seconds long, and it cuts off a little bit of the music at the end. The shortest tracks on the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack are “This Time for Sure” and “Astrid Goes for a Spin,” which clock in at 44 seconds each. So this one would be right in line with both of those.
The entire How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack is a masterpiece by John Powell, and it makes me sad to lose even a tiny fraction of it. This song has a different sound than any other piece of music in that film. Perhaps that’s why it was left out. But I love how pensive it is. It’s a nice respite in between the more intense music surrounding it, while also gearing up for the epic fight about to take place.
Why do you think this piece of music wasn’t included in the film’s soundtrack? Was it a space issue, even though the track would be short? Or was it a style choice? Could the music have been deemed a poor fit for the soundtrack? Maybe it was an oversight. This is quite puzzling to me. There are also two minutes of music missing from the Hideous Zippleback training scene. Perhaps the reason for leaving out that track is related to the one I have been talking about.
If it had a name, I imagine this track would have been called “It’s Okay” or “Snotlout and Hookfang.” I hope you enjoy it. How to Train Your Dragon is one of my favorite films, so it’s always a pleasure to talk about it.

This track may not be on the commercial release, but it is on the both the FYC promo score and the more recently released deluxe edition score. It’s the first 50 seconds of a track, and the name for this particular part of the track is called “Relax”
If you ever want a fleshed out and/or practically complete listening experience with any of the three HTTYD scores, I definitely recommend checking one of these editions out. Though while the FYCs require searching on YouTube to find (and scouring eBay to get a copy of), the deluxe editions are easier to access (being on other mainstream music listening platforms as well as YouTube), and way easier to get your own copy of.
