Music defines certain periods of my life. I can look back at a time of my life and remember the music I mostly listened to during it.
- “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire” was my jam as a teenager approaching a big new world of adulthood.
- “Cristofori’s Dream” by David Lanz is what I listened to over and over as a young adult. It inspired me to dream big during humble beginnings.
- The entire album of Beethoven’s Last Night by Trans-Siberian Orchestra helped me find serenity during my early working years after college.
- “The Construction” from Explorers by Jerry Goldsmith defined the time when I found my groove and was hard at work on big projects.
My Current Music
And now here I am today with the prospect of being a writer in a tumultuous time of AI and other innovations. I’m tasked with mastering all sorts of new skills and living up to exceedingly high expectations. Sometimes it feels impossible.
If there was a piece of music that has helped me through this time it is this one.
How to Win Against Impossible Odds
In the scene from Gladiator that this music is lifted from, the main character is forced to fight in a seemingly impossible scenario. He and his fellow gladiators are competing as the Barbarian Horde against a far superior army with chariots and ranged weapons like arrows.
And they’re playing for keeps.
How can they ever hope to survive? They survive by coming together as one, following the strict commands of their leader, and all doing their part when called upon to act.
It’s a beautiful scene that elevates the film from already quite good to truly great. It does that by being surprising and memorable in all the best ways.
Overcoming Big Challenges
If you’ve never seen Gladiator, I highly recommend giving it a watch. The Barbarian Horde is a standout action sequence, but there are plenty of other great moments in the film. Whenever I start to feel hopelessness creeping in, I revisit this amazing track. As soon as it reaches 4:22, the tide turns and things start to become hopeful again.
This has seen me through a lot of challenging times. I’ve been able to do extremely hard things with the spirit this piece of music stirs in my soul. I hope you’ll be able to accomplish great tasks, too, whether it’s winning an unwinnable battle or succeeding in an increasingly uncertain world. Not only am I entertained, I am uplifted by Gladiator.
