Wonder of Wonders! Miracle of Miracles!

My heart longs to sing and shout for joy! God is a God of miracles today, just as much as He has ever been in the past, for I have received a truly great miracle at His hands. After eight months of searching for a job, I have been blessed with the perfect one!

Like Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, I feel like singing God’s praises the best way I know how. Because I’m well aware that it was not my strength or wisdom alone that led to this. His matchless power is evidenced in what occurred. And I’d like to share it with you. Motel called his experience a wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles. And so do I.

Job Search Full of Miracles

It’s been an incredible journey coming to this point. In May 2025, I was laid off from a company I had worked at for 15 years. That’s a long time to spend at one place, and it was sad to go. I had watched that company grow from less than 50 employees to more than 200, and I had helped it succeed in a variety of roles.

In October, I got a job offer, but I felt the Holy Spirit whisper to me that it wasn’t the right job for me. Can you imagine that? A father of four who is the sole breadwinner of his house having a job offer in his hand and having to turn it down. I had been unemployed for five months back then. In faith, I followed the prompting and gently said no thank you. I trusted that the right job would appear at the proper time.

As it turns out, God loves to wait until the last minute to reveal His grand plan. He tested my faith in a wonderful way. You see, right when my unemployment insurance was expiring, I got an offer letter for a job that’s perfect in every way for me. I received confirmation by the Spirit that I should accept it, and I did just that. I’ll start working next week.

I had been coasting on unemployment insurance since August while I applied for close to 400 jobs. Four hundred applications yielded two job offers, the second of which I happily accepted. I’ve heard of people struggling much longer and applying for many more jobs than I did before seeing success. Why have I been so blessed? I don’t pretend to know the details of God’s plan for all of His children, but I can say that God loves it when people make promises to Him.

Clearing a High Bar

Have you ever heard of Alma Richards? He was a high jumper from Utah who participated in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. He was taller than most high jumpers, but he had trained hard for several years at Brigham Young University to become a great athlete. He jumped higher than most of the best athletes from around the world, but then he had to face off with Hans Lieche, a German high jumper who put everyone else to shame. In order to beat him, Alma would have to clear a bar set at 6 feet 4 inches, an Olympic record at the time. It seemed impossible.

Here is what happened, as recorded in Saints: Volume 3.

“As Alma prepared to jump, his mind raced. There he was, representing his country at the greatest athletic competition in the world. Yet he felt weak, as if the whole world were resting on his shoulders. He thought of Utah, his family, and his hometown. He thought of BYU and the Saints. Bowing his head, he silently asked God to give him strength. ‘If it is right that I should win,’ he prayed, ‘I will do my best to set a good example all the days of my life.’

“Raising his head, he felt his weakness slip away. He threw his shoulders back, walked up to the starting line, and crouched into position. He then skipped forward in a burst of energy and leapt into the air, tucking his knees beneath his chin. His body barreled forward and sailed over the bar with inches to spare.”

After Alma performed this amazing miracle, Hans Lieche tried three times to do the same and failed on each attempt. Alma had brought glory to his country, state, and school. But the true glory he received that day was in his dedication to God. I understand what he meant when he prayed that he would do his best to set a good example all the days of his life. For I made a similar promise to be true to God, overcome my weaknesses, and be a good example if He blessed me with a job.

Willing to Sacrifice on the Altar

The bar seems to be set at a World Record height for anyone hoping to land a job right now. I knew I couldn’t obtain the right job without divine assistance. Before I went in for each interview at the company I eventually got hired at, I prayed mightily that I would be inspired in my words. And He didn’t disappoint.

I often stutter in high-pressure situations, but this time my tongue was loosed so I barely stuttered at all. When I was asked challenging questions, I felt reassuring answers come into my mind.

I cannot tell you all the details of how this miracle came to be any more than Motel could explain how God had given Tzeitel to him as his wife. All I know is that I am now obligated to obey God’s commandments as perfectly as possible. There’s no way I can ever pay Him back fully for this miracle, but I’ll do my best. He could have let me eat into my savings for many more months or made me rely on my food storage and other resources I had been stockpiling for just such an emergency. Instead, he allowed me to see through Abraham’s eyes when he was told to sacrifice his son Isaac.

I put everything I treasure on the altar, and I was prepared to sacrifice it to Him. I was willing to sell my house and move to Idaho, disrupting my family’s life. I was willing to work far away from home in Salt Lake City. I was willing to get completely out of my comfort zone for a new job. God looked upon my offering and said that now He knows that I won’t hold anything back from Him. Of course, He already knew what would happen. But now I know it. And He richly rewarded me with something better than I could have imagined. I get to work much closer than Salt Lake City or Idaho, so I don’t have to move, and I get to do everything I love at my new job.

My heart is softened. My faith is strengthened. And I will shout praises and sing hymns to my God’s glory for delivering me in my hour of need. This experience tested me, and as a result of going through it I’ve emerged a changed man like Alma Richards or Motel. I will do my best to be humble and good because of this wonderful miracle. Wonder of wonders! Miracle of miracles!
