Do you ever listen to music when you’re about to attempt something difficult? Something that gets your heart pumping. Some people like “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky III or “Barbarian Horde” from Gladiator.
Those are both solid pieces of music. But for me, there’s nothing quite like “Good luck, Starfighter” from The Last Starfighter.
Where This Music Fits in the Film
It’s more than just the stirring music that gets me going; it’s the context of the film surrounding it. This short track comes right after Beta has sacrificed himself on Earth to save Alex Rogan from detection by his enemies flying over him deep in outer space. Alex’s girlfriend Maggie Gordon watched Beta die in a massive explosion, and she’s rather traumatized because he looked just like Alex. Now Alex has to single-handedly take on an entire armada as the titular last Starfighter.
To summon the courage for this endeavor, he not only has his friend Grig by his side, but he also glances down at a picture of Maggie. And at that same moment, Maggie looks up into the night sky and says, “I love you, Alex Rogan.”
What This Music Means to Me
There’s something magical about that moment. Whenever I’m attempting something difficult, I can feel my wife praying for me. Even if it seems like we’re a million miles apart, that distance is filled with her love. I think of how much she loves me and believes in me. When I’m nervous about doing a hard task at work, I think of my wife and this music starts to play in my mind.
I realize how much she loves me, and that sustains me. If you have a spouse you adore, make sure they know it. They might just need your strength to overcome seemingly impossible challenges.
The title of this track may be Grig’s words to Alex, but I feel like its sentiment is echoed even more forcefully by Maggie’s powerful “I love you.” So I, too, will echo its deeper meaning by saying: Good luck, Starfighter, in any great endeavor you’re setting out on.
