Hitting Rock Bottom

I rarely start writing without a firm grasp of what I intend to say and where it’s going to go. I’m just going to have to wing it and hope that something good comes from this. Continue reading

What’s Wrong with Me?

Something feels wrong. I love movies in general, but it’s been a long time since I cared about any movie in particular. I had been looking forward to Avengers: Infinity War long before it debuted back in April, and it didn’t disappoint. I saw it twice in theaters, and I loved it both times. But when it came out on Blu-ray, I didn’t buy it. That’s what really cemented this feeling of dread for me. How could I react so indifferently to a movie that met or exceeded all of my expectations and that I had wanted to see since the teaser at the end of The Avengers in 2012? Continue reading

Star Trek’s Whales and Wails

Star Trek is great for many reasons, chief among them is its ability to sprinkle classic literary references into its narratives. Oh, and it also has a flair for the dramatic, so it’s a lot of fun when these two things combine to form a little thing I like to call Star Trek’s Whales and Wails. Continue reading

Pride and Prejudice at The Office

I enjoy good books and witty TV shows. And wouldn’t you know it, I found that two of my favorite pieces of entertainment that fall into these two categories resemble each other in surprising detail. Many of the characters in The Office resemble classic characters from Pride and Prejudice. Let’s go through them and see how they stack up. Continue reading

Terminator 2 and The Spy Who Shagged Me Are Pretty Much the Same Movie

I’m feeling much better this week, and I am stoked to share this movie comparison, which was also inspired by a conversation with another of my brothers. I had just finished watching Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me for the first time, and my younger brother and I were trying to think of another example of a sequel that became a blockbuster smash on the heels of its predecessor’s modest success. Nothing seemed to fit for the longest time until Terminator 2: Judgment Day popped into my head.

In both cases, the first film easily made back its production costs and generated a healthy profit, but the real money was made with the sequel. Those sequels both made more than $200 million domestically. But the comparison doesn’t stop there. Continue reading

No Article This Week

I’m sorry to disappoint my awesome readers, but I’ve been too sick this week to complete the article I had planned. I will publish it next week, and it will be worth the wait because it’s quite funny. It’s a tongue-in-cheek comparison of two movies that couldn’t be more dissimilar, and yet they have a lot in common from a certain point of view. I’ll give you a hint. I’ll be back to throw you frickin’ bone.

This is the Deja Reviewer bidding you farewell until we meet again.

Raiders of The Last Crusade

I have to give all the credit for this article to my oldest brother. He alerted me to the fact that Tomb Raider (2018) is practically a carbon copy of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I had no intention of watching Tomb Raider because it didn’t interest me, but I had to see for myself if the film really is a ripoff of that 1989 classic. And I’m here to say that it absolutely is.

Let’s see how Tomb Raider raided the original raider of the lost Ark. Continue reading

Potentially Ambiguous Movie Titles That Obviously Refer to Just 1 Film

Some great movies get remade with disastrous or forgettable results while other so-so films get remade to spectacular success. In both cases, one film completely overshadows other films that bear its name to the point that no one has to worry that other people won’t understand them when they refer to the one film everyone knows. Here are 11 examples of potentially ambiguous movie titles that obviously refer to just one film. Continue reading

For Every Director in the Alien Series, Their Best Work Was Yet to Come

I’m sure everyone agrees that Alien3 and Alien: Resurrection are not the best films of David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, respectively. But there are probably plenty of people who would argue that Alien and Aliens are the best films of Ridley Scott and James Cameron, respectively. I mean no disrespect to any of these filmmakers, but in truth the Alien films were all just a test of their fledgling directorial abilities, not their magnum opus. I better have a good explanation to back that up, and I do. So let’s find out why for every director in the Alien series, their best work was yet to come. Continue reading

London Screenwriters’ Festival Spotlights the RoboCop Chiasmus

Two years ago, Netflix made a video based on my Back to the Future Trilogy chiasmus article and called it the Lockard Theory. I was honored, of course, that they took note of my analysis. I loved helping others to see what a richer storytelling experience those films become once they notice all the intricacies of how the plot unfolds. But I wasn’t the genius who actually wrote the scripts for those films. Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale did that. Continue reading
