Movies That Improve on Multiple Viewings: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s more than just a superb Disney cartoon. It crams more emotion and interesting characters into just 82 minutes than most movies do in twice that running time.
This is different than the other two movies I’ve reviewed so far in the Movies That Improve on Multiple Viewings section: Enchanted and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. I didn’t like either of those movies when I first saw them, so I basically explained how I changed my mind about them over time. This is going to be a much more upbeat article because I’ll explain how a movie I liked from the start became a movie I love.
The most amazing thing about Beauty and the Beast is that the more times I watch it, the more I enjoy it. I find something new to love with each viewing. Basically everything relates back to the characters, so I’m going to talk about how I’ve grown to love them. I’ll go by size, starting from the smallest and working my way up to the biggest to show how I matured over the years of seeing this movie. Continue reading

Bad Movies with Great Music: Dune (1984)
First of all, I have to say that I really like Frank Herbert’s masterpiece Dune. The book is epic in scope and I’ve never read a better examination of the dilemma of fate and free will than that of Paul Atreides. Anyone who enjoyed the book as much as I did should definitely check out the Sci-Fi Channel’s Dune TV miniseries. It’s more than four hours long, but it really does the book justice and captures most of the intricate plot points and character relationships quite well.
Anyone who is a fan of bad cinema, on the other hand, is in for a sumptuous treat when they watch the 1984 theatrical film Dune. There is a lot of history behind this film. I could spend a whole article talking about Dino de Laurentis, David Lynch and even some of the actors this film wastes, like Patrick Stewart and Max Von Sydow. Instead, I’ll focus on what this film did right, namely its superb musical score. Continue reading

5 Great Movies That Were Saved By Budget Cuts
Thank goodness for budget cuts. Filmmakers sometimes complain that they have to compromise their artistic vision because they didn’t have enough money. But I believe that good filmmakers will wind up being happy that they had less to work with because it forces them to come up with a more creative solution.

Battle of the Message Movies: How to Train Your Dragon vs. Avatar
How to Train Your Dragon is what James Cameron’s Avatar was trying to be. It’s a great movie filled with emotion, action and interesting characters. As a bonus, it has a subtle message that is so central to the film that it’s easy to miss the first few times you watch the movie. Avatar, on the other hand, tries very hard to make the audience care about boring characters and it throws tired action sequences on the screen every now and then that look more like they were directed by Michael Bay than the usually creative Cameron. Its message is hammered into the audience’s head so frequently and obviously that it gets a bit pretentious.
The funny thing is that both of these movies follow virtually the same path almost the whole way through, but they arrive at completely different conclusions. Plus, How to Train Your Dragon is a fun movie I could watch over and over and never get tired of, while Avatar is dull and difficult to sit through all the way to the end. Continue reading
