I Just Ran 9 Miles and I Feel Fine
This article is different than all the others I’ve written so far on this site. I’m just going to open up and talk about myself for a little bit to give you a peek into my life and my way of thinking.
On Saturday, August 27, 2011, I had the privilege of running a relay race with five of my coworkers from a company called Fishbowl. I’m a copywriter there, and I run three blogs all talking about inventory management software. I try to make that topic, which could be boring, into something as interesting as all my movie reviews on this site. I’ve written nearly 300 posts about inventory software so far and I’m not even close to running out of ideas yet, so I think I’m doing pretty well. Continue reading

Movies That Get Worse on Multiple Viewings: Superman Returns
I don’t think Superman Returns is a bad movie. It’s an interesting character study, a solid drama, and a fresh perspective on the comic book genre. But that doesn’t necessarily add up to a great Superman movie. I’ll get to that in a minute. First, I’ll talk about what this movie did right.
The Soaring Score
When I first saw Superman Returns, I was thrilled to see my favorite superhero back on the silver screen. I knew I would at least like this movie before I even saw it because the music was already perfect. It hearkened back to the Planet Krypton theme and the Superman March from the original almost immediately. From the nostalgic opening credits I was hooked. I was ready to be entertained. Movies That Improve on Multiple Viewings: Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium
Some films set their sights very high, others very low. Napoleon Dynamite, for example, is an extremely unambitious movie and it actually succeeds because of that. It’s not pretentious, but soft spoken and light-hearted. Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, on the other hand, has lofty ambitions to be a great film and succeeds in spite of that. It’s trying so hard to be strange and ironic, but it comes across as quietly charming when it finally calms down. Continue reading

Bad Movies with Great Music: The Last Starfighter
Heaven help me, I love The Last Starfighter. For all its over-the-top, gee-whiz, Star Wars-lite tomfoolery, it’s actually a really fun movie. It encapsulates many of the things I love about films from the 1980s: The big hair, fun-loving teenagers, exciting action and, most of all, great music! None of this makes it a good movie, but it comes close.
A Video Game… in Space!
The Last Starfighter, appropriately enough, feels a lot like a video game. If you don’t believe me, go back and play Battle Clash on the Super NES (you know, the game that used the Super Scope) and you’ll feel like Alex Rogan in the cockpit. In that game, you shoot missiles at various robotic enemies and you have to shoot enemies’ missiles before they hit your robot while someone else pilots your robot. That actually sounds a lot like Robot Jox, except with a copilot. Continue reading
