Movie Matchups: The Sixth Sense vs. Ghost

Don’t you just love that sleeper hit from the 1990s about a ghost who stays on earth after he dies to try to help the people he cares about? Which movie am I talking about: either 1999’s The Sixth Sense or 1990’s Ghost. Both movies have so many similarities, it’s easy to get them confused.

Similarities

  • The main character stays on earth after he dies to help the woman he loves.
  • The main character doesn’t realize he’s dead at first.
  • Both films include an attempt to expose a murderer.
  • A spiritual medium is the only one who can see and/or hear the dead main character, until…
  • The main character’s lover is able to see and/or hear them at the end. Continue reading

Forgotten Film Gems: Clue

Believe it or not, next year’s Battleship will not be the first movie ever made based on a board game. That dubious honor goes to 1985’s Clue. But don’t let the fact that it’s inspired by a silly game meant for children bias you against this film.

Clue is one of the cleverest, funniest and most entertaining movies I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Why is it so good? The cast is perfect, the story couldn’t be more airtight and the music is sensational. But instead of me saying all the things that are right about this movie, I’ll let the characters do the talking.

Each of the sections will begin with a quote from the movie. See if you can guess who said each of these lines. At the end I’ll include the answers so you can see which ones you get right. Let the game begin! Continue reading

Movies That Get Worse on Multiple Viewings: Young Frankenstein

My taste in comedy has changed over the years. I used to think Full House was funny and Bill and Ted were the two best comedians in existence. I now know better.

The first time I saw Young Frankenstein I was a teenager. I was still learning to appreciate comedy, but I already loved movies. I had heard this was one of the best comedies of all time, so I watched it eagerly, and I loved every moment. It was comedy genius. But then I got married and I matured a bit more. I showed my wife this film, thinking she would find it just as funny as I had years ago, but suddenly I felt an odd combination of awkwardness and boredom while watching it.

I realized I didn’t like this movie anymore. I guess I must have changed. Young Frankenstein actually helped inspire this section of my website. It was one of the original movies that got worse for me on multiple viewings. So, as you can imagine, I was excited when I realized Halloween was coming around and this is the perfect time to finally give this movie a piece of my mind.

I planned to rip Young Frankenstein to shreds, pointing out all of its imperfections. But as I watched it and took notes, I was surprised when I found very little to complain about. This movie has a great atmosphere and it sucks me right into the story so I have trouble criticizing it. However, it’s still not as good as the first time I saw it, so it fits here. But don’t be surprised if you find a lot of compliments in this article. Continue reading

Movies That Improve on Multiple Viewings: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s more than just a superb Disney cartoon. It crams more emotion and interesting characters into just 82 minutes than most movies do in twice that running time.

This is different than the other two movies I’ve reviewed so far in the Movies That Improve on Multiple Viewings section: Enchanted and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium. I didn’t like either of those movies when I first saw them, so I basically explained how I changed my mind about them over time. This is going to be a much more upbeat article because I’ll explain how a movie I liked from the start became a movie I love.

The most amazing thing about Beauty and the Beast is that the more times I watch it, the more I enjoy it. I find something new to love with each viewing. Basically everything relates back to the characters, so I’m going to talk about how I’ve grown to love them. I’ll go by size, starting from the smallest and working my way up to the biggest to show how I matured over the years of seeing this movie. Continue reading

Bad Movies with Great Music: Dune (1984)

First of all, I have to say that I really like Frank Herbert’s masterpiece Dune. The book is epic in scope and I’ve never read a better examination of the dilemma of fate and free will than that of Paul Atreides. Anyone who enjoyed the book as much as I did should definitely check out the Sci-Fi Channel’s Dune TV miniseries. It’s more than four hours long, but it really does the book justice and captures most of the intricate plot points and character relationships quite well.

Anyone who is a fan of bad cinema, on the other hand, is in for a sumptuous treat when they watch the 1984 theatrical film Dune. There is a lot of history behind this film. I could spend a whole article talking about Dino de Laurentis, David Lynch and even some of the actors this film wastes, like Patrick Stewart and Max Von Sydow. Instead, I’ll focus on what this film did right, namely its superb musical score. Continue reading
