Bad Movies with Great Music: Edward Scissorhands

I know I risk the ire of my patient readers by saying this, but, in my opinion, Edward Scissorhands is not a good movie. I’d like to stress that it’s not terrible, either. The main reason I consider it bad is because it fails to live up to its potential. It comes so close to being great, but it always finds a way to disappoint. However, Danny Elfman’s soundtrack is perfect, and I think it’s some of his greatest work.

Edward Scissorhands’ Heart

Edward Scissorhands is basically a modern twist on the classic Frankenstein story. Its heart lies in its main character Edward and his relationship to a teenage girl named Kim. Johnny Depp and Wynona Rider are perfect in their respective roles, each acting vulnerable, kind and confused at just the right times. The music that plays in the scenes between them is full of yearning and joy, as well as a twinge of sadness. Continue reading

Movie Matchups: DreamWorks Animation Triple Feature!

Over the past few years, the quality of DreamWorks Animation’s films has gone up dramatically. They’ve given Pixar a run for its money with great movies like Megamind, How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda. What has suddenly changed at DreamWorks? I think I know the answer: They discovered they’re good at telling a story. In fact, they realized they do such a good job at it that they’ve told the same story three times! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I’m going to show how the stories of Megamind, How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda are identical. This is a bit ambitious for me because I usually just compare two films. Wish me luck. Now sit back and enjoy this new, exciting adventure! Continue reading

How I Know Miracles Are Real

I would like to share a story that is near and dear to my heart in honor of Thanksgiving. Some people believe miracles aren’t real or that they don’t happen anymore like they did anciently, but I humbly disagree. Miracles take place every day, though sometimes we don’t notice them. Here is a miracle that I experienced on July 18, 2008. Continue reading

Making Star Wars vs. Writing the U.S. Constitution

Is it blasphemous to compare a document as divinely inspired as the United States Constitution to a film written and directed by a man who went on to create a character named Jar Jar Binks? I’ll let you decide. No matter how different the film Star Wars: A New Hope and the Constitution may seem, I’m about to show you that they actually have a lot in common in how they came about and how they’ve affected the world.

First, I’ll list all the similarities. Then I’ll go through them one by one:

  • Each creation was inspired by one visionary man.
  • Each visionary used ideas from the past to create something new and fresh.
  • Others revised and built upon the visionary’s ideas to make the final product better than he could have done by himself.
  • Without the aid of a beloved icon, both projects would likely have failed.
  • Some things had to be abandoned in order to ensure the project’s success.
  • The work first won over Americans and then people around the world.
  • Politics and the film industry were changed forever by the advent of these creations.
  • The two works have been amended several times over the years. Continue reading

Battle of the Message Movies: Cars vs. Groundhog Day

You’re probably thinking, “What on earth does Cars have to do with Groundhog Day? You’ve gone too far this time with your movie comparisons. How dare you!” Or something like that. I can understand your skepticism, but I think by the end of this article you’ll see these two films from a new perspective, and you’ll agree that not only do they have the same message, but also just about the same story. Pixar practically remade Bill Murray’s classic comedy. So let’s get started! Continue reading
