Forgotten Film Gems: National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1

Do yourself a favor and go watch National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1 right now. Seriously. It’s on Netflix and it’s probably also at your local library. This is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and I don’t want you to miss out on it. Anyone who says the film parody died after 1980’s Airplane! has probably never seen this 1993 gem of a film.

I’m not a fan of practically any parody released in the past decade, but there were plenty of funny ones in the ‘80s and ‘90s. And Loaded Weapon 1 is definitely among the best. It pokes fun at a genre that is ripe for the picking: the buddy-cop action film. It specifically targets Lethal Weapon and its first two sequels, as well as a few others like Silence of the Lambs, Basic Instinct and even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’ll mainly talk about my favorite jokes in this movie to explain why I like it. Continue reading

No Article This Week. Sorry

I’m afraid I won’t be able to publish an article this week. I was visiting my siblings and parents in Washington State all last week and as soon as I got back home last Friday I got extremely sick. So I haven’t been able to finish my next article in time.

I apologize for my failure to meet my usual deadline of posting a new article each Tuesday. Life can get hectic sometimes. I’ll still publish a Joke of the Week on Friday, so I won’t let you down there. I hope you had a merry Christmas and that 2012 is off to a great start for you. Thank you for continuing to visit my blog and enjoy my insights into movies.

This is the Deja Reviewer bidding you farewell until we meet again.

Funny Christmas Carol: Let Us Know!

Merry Christmas! I wrote this parody of the famed Christmas carol “Let It Snow” a few years ago in honor of my parents. They’re both very sweet to let their children visit them so often. Plus, my younger brother and sister were just about to get married, so I had plenty of inspiration to draw from. I hope you enjoy it!

Let Us Know
(Parody of Let It Snow)

Oh, you’re all moved out and grown up,
But suddenly you’ve shown up
Asking for a bed and pillow.
Let us know! Let us know! Let us know!

We like when you come visit,
But could I please ask is it
Too hard before up you show
To let us know? Let us know! Let us know!

CHORUS:
It was cute when you were dating
To bring him or her to our home,
But it got quite irritating
When we couldn’t leave you two alone!

So before you come a-knocking
And you hear the deadbolt locking
And us boarding up the windows,
Let us know! Let us know! Let us know!

Forgotten Film Gems: Christmas Eve on Sesame Street

Merry Christmas! I love this time of year. Even though the weather seems to get worse every day, my spirits brighten more and more as I approach that happy holiday on December 25. That’s the day when I’m reunited with family members and we all get to do something kind for each other.

There have been many films made about Christmas. Some of them do a great job capturing the excitement and wonder of this holiday, but the one that does it better than any other is, actually, not a film that was released in theaters. It’s an hour-long 1978 PBS special called Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. From beginning to end, this movie is both heartwarming and hilarious. I enjoy every minute of it, and I’d like to share it with you so you don’t miss out on all the fun. Continue reading

Movie Matchups: Sherlock Holmes (2009) vs. Batman Begins

It’s time for one of the greatest showdowns of all time! The world’s greatest detective (Sherlock Holmes, of course) vs. the world’s greatest detective (Batman, naturally)! In honor of the upcoming release of Sherlock Holmes 2, I’m going to show how that film’s predecessor is virtually the same as another reimagining of a famous fictional character: Batman Begins.

So pull out your magnifying glass and let’s put together the clues to the mystery of what Sherlock Holmes has in common with Batman Begins. Continue reading
