Is Anger Funny?

Have you noticed that most of what passes for comedy on the Internet is anger? I don’t mean to denigrate Internet reviewers like the Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd. I often find their work to be creative and fun. But that doesn’t change the fact that their videos are full of childish tirades and excessive expletives.

I noticed that this is a problem when I watched the Nostalgia Critic’s recent video apologizing for his mistakes. At one point, he asks his viewers to calm down when writing their angry responses to him about nitpicky details he gets wrong in his reviews. Here’s a man who is constantly pretending to be violently angry in his videos, and he’s asking people to stop being so mad at him for no reason. That made me realize that there’s a serious disconnect between online content creators and online consumers. The writers and actors are presenting absurd responses to films, video games and other things that shouldn’t really evoke such strong emotions. But people who read their articles and watch their videos seem to miss the point that this is all a charade. Continue reading

James Cameron’s Best Movie

What is James Cameron’s best movie? It’s not Aliens. It’s not Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It’s not even Titanic. No, his best movie is one that he planned more than a decade before it became a reality. He had to wait until he had built a reputation for being an amazing director to get a studio to gamble on his ambitious film. Plus, the technology simply didn’t exist to tell the story the way he wanted to, so he had to invent most of it himself.

No, I’m definitely not talking about Avatar. That was a silly and contrived mess. James Cameron’s best movie is, without a doubt, The Abyss. The Special Edition, in particular.

You might be thinking that that is a silly thing to say because The Abyss isn’t usually considered a classic in the same way as Cameron’s other films. In addition, it is his only major box-office disappointment to date. But I really do believe that it’s his best film. Of course, anytime a person claims something is the absolute best in its category, they had better be ready to give a good explanation for saying that. And I’m ready to. So let’s peer into The Abyss and see what wonders we’ll find in it. Continue reading

Movie Matchups: Star Trek: The Motion Picture vs. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Since my first attempt at talking about 2001: A Space Odyssey was such a resounding success (Stanley Kubrick fans lined up to hurl insults at me), I thought I might as well finish what I started and try to set the record straight on what I think about this film. I hope I’m not committing an unpardonable sin, but I would like to compare and contrast 2001: A Space Odyssey with the very first Star Trek film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. What’s the worst that could happen?

First of all, I sort of like Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Its slowness is one of its bizarre charms. It’s a wonder to watch a movie like this because it doesn’t seem particularly interested in whether the audience comes along for the ride or not. I feel like it’s daring me to sit through it. Also, I’ve heard Star Trek: The Motion Picture compared to 2001: A Space Odyssey many times, but I’ve never heard anyone put their finger on all of the similarities. Instead, I’ve just heard general statements about the two films having a similar style and being about the vastness of space. I’m going to attempt to clearly explain how Star Trek: The Motion Picture is virtually a remake of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

So open the pod bay doors and set phasers on stun because our human adventure is just beginning. Continue reading

Moneyball and The Book of Mormon

This is a truly unique article for me. I created the Deja Reviewer website less than a year ago to allow myself to share my enlightening views on film, not literature. I didn’t intend to discuss books at all. I also never considered introducing religious ideas on this website, and I do so now with great apprehension, for I know it invites bitter criticism. But I was simply amazed by the similarities between two seemingly unrelated books – Moneyball and The Book of Mormon – and I just had to bring them to my good readers’ attention.

The similarities didn’t leap out at me until I read the Afterword in Moneyball. Indeed, I intend to focus on the effects of these books more than on the actual material contained in them. With this in mind, I humbly invite you to join me on this journey of bold ideas. Continue reading

How MST3K Inspired the Internet Generation

The first generation of Internet users has been heavily influenced by many things. It might seem silly to try to pin down one aspect that had the biggest influence, but that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’d like to share an intriguing little idea on how the TV show Mystery Science Theater 3000 (referred to hereafter as MST3K) helped shape the Internet we all know and love.

I don’t mean that MST3K invented the Internet in a technical way. I mean that many of the people responsible for the content online are MST3K fans and are heavily influenced by that show’s style and its brand of comedy. The Nostalgia Critic, Angry Video Game Nerd, Confused Matthew, SF Debris, and other online personalities have mentioned that they are either MST3K fans or they have at least seen the show. In addition, you’ll find a lot of similarities between people who consume online content, post comments, etc. and the characters on the show.

If you’re wondering how all of this will make sense, you should really just relax and join me for a fresh take on Mystery Science Theater 3000!
